Hemsworth: 'Hunger Games' violence not gratuitous

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "The Hunger Games" may be about kids who are forced to fight to the death on live TV, but one of its stars, Liam Hemsworth, said the violence in the film isn't for nothing.

"None of it is glorified and it's not about that," said the 22-year-old Australian.

"It's about kids in a horriblegirls nike shox
situation and there's this girl who overcomes it and gives hope to everyone and they come together to do something about it," he said.

In the PG-13 movie, which opens Friday, Hemsworth plays Gale Hawthorne, the best friend of Katniss Everdeen, portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence. His role in the first "Hunger Games" story is a small one but is more prevalent in the two stories that follow. (They're based on a best-selling book trilogy by Suzanne Collins.)

Hemsworth doesn't have any fight scenes in the first film but did have to lose "quite a bit of weight" to play a teen living in a poor area who hunts to help feed his family.

He recalled one memorable day off from dieting during filming in North Carolina when he and costar Josh Hutcherson nike outlet park city

"Josh and I went to Kentucky — he's from Kentucky," Hemsworth said. "We decided to get White Castle, nikes for cheap
which I'd never had before, and then we played basketball after eating the White Castle and we threw up a little bit so that was interesting."

"The Hunger Games" also stars Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz and Donald Sutherland.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer promised Alabama fans Wednesday that she would do everything possible to make sure some of her future movies are made in her home state.

Spencer, who won this year's best supporting actress Oscar for her performance as the maid "Minnie" in "The Help," told the crowd in Montgomery that her home would always be in Alabama.

Wearing a purple dress, she rode up to the Statehouse in a pink limousine for the ceremony. She was serenaded by the band from her alma mater, Jefferson Davis High School. She even paused for a moment to lead the band.

The Montgomery native thanked Rep. Terri Collins, R-Decatur, for sponsoring a bill, approved by the state House, to increase the incentives the state offers for movies to be made in Alabama. The bill was approved later Wednesday by the Senate.

Multiple speakers, including Gov. Robert Bentley and leaders of the House and Senate, greeted Spencer at a joint session of the Legislature. Bentley proclaimed Wednesday as "Octavia Spencer Day in Alabama.

"We want to make sure your next Oscar is on a film shot right here in Alabama," Speaker Mike Hubbard told the actress.

The running joke throughout Spencer's visit concerned Minnie's famous pies in the movie, including one she made for her boss that included a nauseating ingredient and led to her being fired.

With film music, Brussels orchestra veers from usual business model

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The Brussels Philharmonic used to wait by the phone and occasionally a filmmaker would call. The symphony orchestra did, after all, perform the music on Martin Scorsese's 2004 movie "The Aviator", winning the Golden Globe that year for Best Original Score.

But after one million euros ($1.3 million) in public funding cuts over the past two years, patience has become a luxury.

General manager Gunther Broucke solicited movie producers at a film festival in Ghent last year: The orchestra wanted work.

Among the first to call were producers for "The Artist", the silent French film which won the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Original Score at the Academy Awards in February.

A mix of film music, a new record label and an expansive tour schedule have since solidified the philharmonic's finances with 800,000 euros in additional income, nearly offsetting the public funding cuts.

Broucke took over the orchestra in September 2003 during what he describes as the "dark days", when its relationships with politicians and promoters were "in tatters."

The orchestra, founded in 1935, was on the brink of folding.

But on Saturday the orchestra played to a sell-out crowd of about 950 people at Brussels' Flagey arts centre, performing Mozart's 20th piano concerto and Berlioz's Symphone Fantastique.

For Broucke, it wasn't just the privilege of an engaged audience, but of the orchestra continuing to exist at all.

"One has to be lucky in life sometimes," he said.

Broucke recently signed a five-year deal to guarantee a minimum yearly subsidy of 8.1 million euros from the Flanders regional government, securing funds through 2016.

The public money accounts for 80 to 85 percent of the orchestra's budget.

The Brussels Philharmonic fits in the public funding tradition of European orchestras as opposed to the United States model of private funding from foundations and individuals.

Both models, however, have been hurt by the recession.

European governments, turning to austerity, have cut arts funding, such as in Belgium. In the United States, private giving to the 400 largest charities was down 11 percent in 2009 with gains of 3.5 percent in 2010 and an estimated 4.7 percent in 2011.

With minimum funding established for the next five years, Broucke is trying to find new sources of revenue.

A year ago, the Brussels Philharmonic startedfactory nike outlet

"Belgian orchestras are very good," said Michel Tabachnik, the conductor of the philharmonic, who is Swiss.

The first album sold about 2,500 copies. No sales figures are yet available for the second album, released last month.

Puzo family fires back at studio in "Godfather" suit

(Reuters) - The estate of "The Godfather" author Mario Puzo has fired back at movie studio Paramount Pictures with a $10 million counterclaim over Paramount's attempts to block a new book in the Mafia saga.

Lawyers for the estate of Puzo also sought to end Paramount's rights to the 1969 best-seller, which went on to become an Oscar-winning movie released by the studio.

"Mario Puzo brought vast wealth to Paramount at a time when they desperately needed it. Now that he's gone, Paramount's trying to deprive his children of the rights he specifically nike outlets
reserved," Bertram Fields, an attorney for the Puzo family, said in a statement on Tuesday.

"I promised Mario I'd protect his kids from this kind of reprehensible conduct. Paramount wanted a war, and they're going to get one - only the stakes will be much higher than they thought," Fields added.

Paramount filed a lawsuit in Manhattan federal court in February that accused Puzo's heirs of approving sequels to "The Godfather" without the studio's permission and in violation of earlier agreements.

A third book "The Family Corleone" is due to be published in May. It is billed as an all-new prequel to "The Godfather" set in New York in 1933.

The counterclaim, filed on Monday, said Puzo's estate had informed Paramount several times of the upcoming publication of "The Family Corleone" and noted that the movie studio had not objected to the book "The Godfather's Revenge" in 2006.

Moreover, the estate said, Puzo received nike outlet las vegas
only "minimal payment" from Paramount for the rights to "The Godfather" and that the agreement at the time excluded rights to any further books that include the characters from "The Godfather" in new and different situations.

"The Puzo Estate, representing the children of Mario Puzo, needs no permission from Paramount to use the title of their father's novel or to publish a sequel novel or to use what Paramount claims are 'the Godfather works'," the counterclaim said.

Attorneys asked the court to terminate the rights of Paramount to the original "The Godfather" book and askednike store coupon
for $10 million in damages.

Paramount could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday.

Mario Puzo died in 1999. The two sequels to the story of the Corleone Mafia family that have been published since his death were written by U.S. author Mark Winegardner, and the forthcoming third novel is written by Ed Falco.
